There
are lots of Loopers here at Liberty Landing Marina. We met another
couple last night that complained about the rain...... I don't mind
the rain or the rocking of the boat that puts us to sleep at night...
will we ever be able to sleep on land again?
Both
Walter and I have been to NYC before... I have been here several
times and Walter & our son, David, came soon after 9/11 to see
the boardway musical that friends of ours wrote. So not being able
to see the city is not too disappointing to us however, we did want
to see the Freedom Tower close up. And tonight I was hoping to get a
picture of the beautiful skyline that is directly across the river
from us. It is hidden in heavy clouds and the rain is pouring down
now.
We
needed groceries so this morning we got directions for a grocery store in downtown
Manhattan. We put on what we always thought were good raincoats and
walked to the end of our dock and boarded the Liberty Landing ferry
boat for a short ride across the river. Walter was like a native New
Yorker... he stepped out in the street and waited for an opening in
the traffic! I used to stand on the conner waiting when I first came
up here.... easy to tell I was a visitor!
The
grocery store was a Whole Foods store and didn't have most of what we
wanted... we had to read labels to understand what we were about to
buy.... my vegetarian friends would have loved the healthy store...
we had one rolling cart but bought another one that was enclosed with
water proof fabric to get our load back to the boat.
We
discovered our “raincoats” are actually windbreakers! We were
soaked and cold... the heater in the boat felt so good as we unloaded
our stuff and then checked out the boat store to see if they had real
rain coats. Walter had seen some in there earlier. Turned out one of
the mega Yachts here bought them out this morning. But our trip over
to the store was delightful as we met another Looper and talked at
length to him. He agreed we should “do it now” speaking about
the Loop. His wife has a physical problem that keeps her from being
able to handle the lines … lots of pain there.. he has two friends
traveling with them to help so she doesn't have to do anything. He
said if they had done this last year she would have had no
problems... kinda sad.. but confirmed that Walter was right when he
said we needed to do this trip this year and not wait as I had wanted
to do to PLAN more.
Walter
is doubling up the lines tonight on the boat as she is moving a lot
from side to side in this slip. The new report on the tropical storm
is that it is dissipating and will be a lot less by 10a tomorrow. We
plan to leave then... some boats left early today before the wind & rain got bad to travel up the Hudson
River. We are studying the tides now and the high tide comes at
about 11a and will push against us going up the River for about 6 hours...
friends that left two days ago took a long time to go a short
distance because they were fighting the tide. Hopefully, after
burning a lot of fuel yesterday trying to get off the Atlantic as fast as we could we can
be more conservative for our next cruise. We are heading to
Croton-on-Hudson.. IF the rain & wind lessen tomorrow.
Rain
or no rain this is a magical trip upon the water! Yes, I am still
pinching myself to make sure I am awake.... I am! And it is all
GRAND!
